Maremma

The Natural reserve of Maremma was created in 1975, it extends on 9800 hectares and along the coast. It is a very protected zone, with a preserved nature. There is one of the only intact coastal zones of the Italian littoral, and among the most beautiful.

Inside the reserve, the last marshy grounds close to the mouth of Ombrone, rich of wildlife, with important colonies of paludous birds and some raptors. The south of the park is composed by hills of Uccellina covered with a thick Mediterranean vegetation, of pine forest, very diversified species and very old olive-trees.
Typical fauna is made up of wild boars, caprine, dains, foxes, varied reptiles and many birds. Towards the east, at the foot of the hills, there is vast spaces grassy where graze the cows of Maremma and horses. The Park counts also archeological sites, Etruscan, Romans, and towers of the medieval times, and the Abbey of S. Rabano.
